Re: Sweet Charity - JC Ferris 1893 Antique Frame

I have the same work signed and dated by JC Ferris  1893. It  also is framed with glass and  a slightly narrower elaborate antique gold frame measuring ~16"x22" , and has the rough wooden backing. It was in the attic of the house in upstate NY, where I grew up;  my mother gave it to me just before her death 30 years ago. I knew nothing more about it, but when some antique dealers were in Seattle soliciting American paintings from the 19th century,  I called about it. The appraiser was familiar with the artist,  suggested that it was possibly a water color print and without seeing it guessed its value at about $2000. That is all the info I have. I  still own it.

Re: Sweet Charity - JC Ferris 1893 Antique Frame

Hard for an old lady to get to this page, I am 81 years old. To the painting.. "Sweet Chairty" My grandmother painted a copy of this painting in 1894-5 as a teen ager with no art lessons. It hung in her home all my life until she died and then my mother got it. As artist run in the family, we are decendents of Agustine Clements from the 1600's in Boston, Mass. Years later after my mother died, I met a lady who was having her antique print of "Sweet Charity" re-framed and told her my story. She allowed me to borrow her print and I painted myself a copy from it. This copy now hangs in my home, the one my grandmiother painted so many long years ago has now crumbled beyond repair.. sad. But I thought this was sort of an interesting story about this painting.

The colors in the ladies coat are different from the print I copied. In the print I copied the colors were more to the pink side rather then the salmon color in this print. Do you know when your print was printed, different years could have made the difference in color. Does anyone know where the origional painting how is?

By the way, I am still painting and even teaching art, been teaching 16 years.
