Frederick Remington

By magmom, 17 June, 2025
Description

I have a Frederick Remington I took to a local art gallery last week. The gentleman said it was authentic and an original water color. He said he wanted to do more research on it and since he would be representing me in an auction that he would get back with me but I haven't heard anything back from him. I was wondering what the value might be

Preliminary Appraisal for Possible Frederic Remington Watercolor

Summary

Artist: Frederic Remington (1861–1909)
Title (Attributed): Lieutenant Watson, Tenth Cavalry
Medium: Watercolor on paper
Dimensions: Approximately 10 Âľ" x 9"
Condition: Excellent
Signature: Signed “Frederic Remington” in pencil, lower right
Inscription: Identifies subject as “Lieutenant Watson, Tenth Cavalry”
Framing: Period matting with backing label from The Army & Navy Co-operative Society, Westminster, England

Authentication and Attribution

Frederic Remington is one of the most revered American artists of the 19th century, best known for his dynamic portrayals of the American West, cavalrymen, and frontier life. This work, titled “Lieutenant Watson, Tenth Cavalry,” fits his documented interests, particularly his frequent depictions of African American “Buffalo Soldiers” and U.S. Cavalrymen.

The piece bears a clear signature, and the style—monochromatic with detailed military attire—resembles several known drawings and studies by Remington. The old label from the Army & Navy Co-operative Society—an elite supplier in Westminster—further supports a 19th to early 20th-century provenance. This society operated prominently during Remington’s lifetime and had dealings with British and American military figures.

However, as with any artwork of this significance, formal authentication is highly recommended through a recognized expert in Remington’s work or a major American fine art institution. This will not only confirm authorship but dramatically affect value at auction.

Estimated Market Value

Assuming authentication as an original Frederic Remington watercolor or ink wash:

  • Auction Estimate (Authenticated): $12,000–$25,000 USD
  • Retail Gallery Value: $25,000–$40,000+ USD
  • Unauthenticated but strong attribution: $3,000–$6,000 USD

Note: Value reflects current 2025 market conditions for original Remington works, rarity of watercolor format, and military subject matter.

Collector Interest

Collectors of Remington’s works are often institutions, Western art collectors, and military history enthusiasts. The specificity of the subject (“Lieutenant Watson, Tenth Cavalry”) could enhance value if archival records link him to a real officer—particularly among the famed Buffalo Soldiers or Spanish-American War cavalrymen.

Next Steps & Recommendations

  1. Do not remove the artwork from the frame without a conservator.
  2. Contact a certified fine art appraiser or the Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, NY, for expert evaluation.
  3. Request written authentication and condition report for insurance or auction purposes.
  4. Consider consigning through Heritage Auctions, Bonhams, or Sotheby’s American Art for maximum exposure.
