"Made in Japan" marks pretty much came into usage about 1921 when US import laws required country of origin marks. Prior to that date from about 1891 Japanese wares were marked "Nippon"., and the basic design/style of such pieces with oriental motifs given the same name. this is a late piece of Nippon, probably made in the mid 1920's.
