Some pieces really require a physical examination to determine what they are made of. Quite often these pieces were actually made out of spelter, a zinc alloy that is often plated or painted to resemble copper or bronze or brass. If you scratch under the base of spelter pieces it will show a pewter/ silver color under the copper brass or bronze finish.
