Oil Painting S. (Zvi or Svi) Raphaely Portrait

By zehavi, 23 March, 2010
Description

This is an original S. Raphaely oil painting of his friend, Jacob Meyer. He attached a business card to the back of the painting which reads: "Portrait from memory of my friend Jacob Meyer studying guemara in the light of a petroleum lamp in the Mea Shearim 1945. I started 1992 and finish (sic) 1995." S. Raphaely 15 July 1995 The painting measures 20" wide by 24" high and the frame measures 33" wide by 37" high by 4 1/2" deep. Certificate of authenticity. I purchased this painting directly from Rabbi Raphaely in 1995. What is so unique about this painting is that it is a portraiture. The vast majority of Raphaelys are of streetscapes and landscapes. I toured his gallery and I did not see a single portraiture.

Portrait of Jacob Meyer Studying by Oil Lamp by S. Raphaely

Portrait of Jacob Meyer Studying by Oil Lamp by S. Raphaely (1992–1995)

Artist:
S. (Zvi or Svi) Raphaely – A 20th-century Jewish-Israeli painter known primarily for nostalgic street scenes, old Jerusalem neighborhoods (like Mea Shearim), and expressive depictions of Jewish life. While his works are somewhat niche, they are respected and collected by those interested in Judaica and Israeli art.

Description & Provenance:
This is a rare original portrait oil painting by S. Raphaely, titled (unofficially) Portrait of Jacob Meyer Studying Guemara by Lamp Light. It measures 20" x 24" (canvas) and 33" x 37" x 4.5" (frame). The painting was completed in 1995, signed, and authenticated via a handwritten note and business card by the artist, explaining it was painted from memory over a 3-year period (1992–1995).

You purchased it directly from the artist in 1995 for $1,800 USD, and it has been preserved in good condition since. The subject matter—a devout Jewish man studying the Talmud (Guemara) by kerosene lamp—is deeply representative of Orthodox life in early 20th-century Jerusalem and is culturally rich and evocative.

Uniqueness & Artistic Significance:

  • Uncommon subject: Raphaely rarely painted portraits. Most of his publicly seen work is of street scenes or landscapes in Israel.
  • Historical and cultural context: Strong emotional resonance with Jewish collectors due to the subject and its origin in Mea Shearim.
  • Framed exquisitely: The heavy carved gilt wood frame adds substantial value.

Authentication:

âś… Authenticated by artist directly (signed note & business card)
âś… Consistent style and subject matter
âś… Known provenance (direct from artist)

Current Market Value:

Condition

Estimated Value

Excellent

$3,000 – $5,000 USD

Good (minor wear/frame aging)

$2,000 – $3,000 USD

Given the rarity of Raphaely’s portraiture, the direct connection to the artist, and the Judaic subject matter, this painting may appeal to collectors of Israeli art, Jewish religious art, or heritage collections—potentially driving value even higher at the right venue.

Recommendations:

  • Professional appraisal: Recommended if you plan to insure the painting or loan it to a museum or synagogue gallery.
  • Storage: Avoid direct sunlight and excessive humidity to preserve the oil and frame.
  • Resale: If ever sold, Jewish and Israeli art auction houses or Judaica dealers would be best. eBay may undervalue it.
