Antique lamp, Man, Woman Victorian style with chain ceramic or porcelain

By donna7238, 19 August, 2012
Description

I believe this is antique lamp, made of either ceramic or porcelain. I don't know who in the family came about this beautiful man, woman lamp that has a chain to pull to light it up. The bulb does not come with it. There is not a lamp shade, but it does work. I think it may be a Victorian style lamp. It is about 10 1/2" tall, and about 4 1/4" across. On the bottom are the #'s 7061B. The lamp holder has Leviton, Made in USA, 660w, 250v, Lamp holder. Does anyone know something about this style lamp? If so, would you know the value? Thank you, Donna

Re: Antique lamp, Man, Woman Victorian style with chain...

This antique figurine lamp looks like it's from the "Occupied Japan" time span of 1945-1952.  There were similar figurine lamps manufactured in Japan after World War 2. More history on "Occupied Japan" products can be found at http://gotheborg.com/qa/oj.shtml.  For similar products to yours go to http://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A12%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1%257C72%253A5521&rt=nc&_nkw=antique%20figurine%20lamps&_dmpt=Antiques_Decorative_Arts&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.l1513&_pgn=2.    You should be able to easily get $50 from your lamp.

God Bless!

Re: Antique lamp, Man, Woman Victorian style with chain...

I went to both sites you mentioned. On eBay I did fin a few that was almost like mine. However, if you could look at the picture with the mark, mine has #'s and markings below it I can't make out. Mine also has a chain to turn on the light. It also says Leviton made in USA on the lampholder. I couldn't find any on eBay with this or with a chain. Does this mean mine could have been modified? On the bottom it has #'s.

The lamp I have has a chain you pull to turn the light on. The lamp socket reads Leviton Made in USA. On ebay I could not find one with a chain. 1. Could mine still have been made in Japan?

Is it possible mine was made in Japan as you say, and was modified because the socket has on it Leviton made in USA?

Re: Antique lamp, Man, Woman Victorian style with chain...

Hi Donna,

I think you are saying that it is only the "lampholder" (the place where you screw in the bulb) that says "made in USA."

If that is true, then most likely it is a new socket installed so that the lamp could be safely used in the USA.
Electric current is a little different in Japan even now, and it may have been more so back then.

This may change the value for some collectors, but if the lamp wasn't modified in any other way it should retain most of it's value as an antique, not to mention a collectible.

Good luck

Re: Antique lamp, Man, Woman Victorian style with chain...

Thank you, yes the socket the bulb screws in is the part I was referring to. Your reply makes sense. However, the bottom does not say anything about Japan, so that must have rubbed off. It does have #'s on the bottom. Thanks again..

Re: Antique lamp, Man, Woman Victorian style with chain...

I agree with the other posters, it's Japanese. A lot of these were made pre and post World War Two, many had paper or foil labels, which were often removed after sale or have simply fallen off.
