Satsuma Uchida China Set

By ycoleman31, 9 July, 2012
Description

We purchased a china set at an estate auction.  The china is a design we are not famaliar with, however the pieces are quite stunning.  We did some research based on the mark on the bottom of the pieces, and believe it to be Satsuma Uchida.

We want to know what the value of the set is.  When it was made, and is it really Satsuma Uchida.  Below are all the pieces we have.

1 serving platter   6 plates (1 chipped)   4 soup/salad bowls   8 small bowls   6 saucers   5 dessert plates   1 teapot   1 sugar bow ( chip on inside lip)   1 creamer  4 tea cups

Re: Satsuma Uchida China Set

Hi ycoleman31

I bought some pieces of an earthenware tea service for ÂŁ5 from a charity shop in the UK today.

The items in good condition include a teapot, sugar bowl, a cup, two saucers, four sandwich plates and a lidless milk jug as well as some damaged pieces.

The pieces are individually hand decorated.

I have been researching the makers mark and the provenance for a few hours. The mark is the same as yours and I came to the same conclusion that it’s Satsuma Uchida, which by the way is Japanese.

From what you have said and from the pictures it seems that your set is porcelain, not earthenware, and lacks the fine detail, off white colour and fine crazing typical of Satsuma.

However it may well be genuine and I would check it out further before putting it up for sale.
