WW1 Sketch books

By iffytipton, 9 July, 2012
Description

I have two sketch books which my grandfather carried with him while serving in WW1 in France.  My grandfather was a sign painter for a living, and quite the artist.  He was in the camouflage unit with the AEF.  He sketched the surroundings, artillery, and comic pictures of nurses and fellow soldiers.  I also have several letters that he sent home during his tour.  The drawings are water colors, and pen and ink, some pencil, and are in good condition.  There are also several short stories written in the books, mostly about the deplorable conditions they were living in.   I had an antique dealer who looked at the books and said he wouldn't even know where to begin in appraising the books....he said they belong in the Smithsonian.   I hate parting with them, but I'd like to share them with others interested in WW1 items.    I have no pictures at this time as I have been advised to have them taken professionally.

Items like original art and journals really require a physical appraisal, which is why you have not received a response. Another reason is nobody is willing to look at an appraisal request without images. What you need to do is contact any War Museum and ask for a referral to an appraiser or dealer who works in theis area of collecting.
