Spanish Bargueno/Vargueno

By Introspector, 14 February, 2008
Description

This is a strange piece, it is certainly a Moorish vargueno however beyond that fact I have had little luck in identifying the value, origin or age. it is my best guess that it is from around the turn of the 17th or 18th century and from Grenada however I am most likely wrong ;). Anyway I am trying to value this item in a effort to help fund college, so any help would be much appreciated indeed.

Apparently the image upload on this page is a bust so you can find pictures of it here (Full), here (top) and here (legs).

Thanks!,

-Martin

Pieces like this are very hard to identify from images, and virtually every one of these I've seen is a Spanish Revival piece from the 1920's. Most were made using almost the same methods as the originals, only their lack of wear gives them away. At auction comparable examples sell in the $2000.00- $4500.00 range.

That does seem to be the concensous... with reguards to the age being primary and the wear being the decerning factor. I suppose if I were to find a maker's mark that might do the trick in aging it.. otherwise might as well keep it for that price, until I am really broke that is ;)   I really apreciate that you took the time to respond, thanks much.
