Accurate Description of Item
One late 19th Century Hales Crescent Sewing Machine
Appraiser Remarks
The Crescent sewing machines were just one of many that arrived on the scene during the last half of the 19th century only to be eventually crushed by bigger makers like Singer, which began to dominate the market by the 1870's.
Treadle machines were a huge breakthrough in labor saving household devices and virtually every household that could afford one had one, they were produced on a level unmatched until the arrival of assembly lines used by Henry Ford to build Model T automobiles. Just the Singer company along had produced over 50 million machines by the 1870's, of which a great many survive to this day.
While there is some interest in some very rare or early machines the vast majority of late 19th century machines like your Crescent tend to sell for about $150.00.
