Artist Information – James D. Coleman

James D. Coleman (1949–2023) was a well-known American artist who began his career with Disney in the 1970s. He worked on animated classics such as Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King. After leaving Disney, Coleman became celebrated for his landscape paintings, especially his glowing seascapes and forest scenes, frequently inspired by the natural beauty of the American West, including Yosemite.

His works are widely collected and reproduced as giclée prints and limited editions, but original oil paintings, especially larger ones, can be quite valuable depending on subject, condition, and authentication.

Visual & Artistic Analysis:

  • Composition: The painting depicts a moody, atmospheric winter forest scene in Yosemite, with a central bare tree framed by misty pine woods and distant cliffs—possibly inspired by El Capitan.
  • Technique: Painted in soft, subtle gradients with delicate brushwork typical of Coleman’s ethereal style. The use of lighting and haze is consistent with his known body of work.
  • Signature: Clearly signed "James D. Coleman ©" in lower corner. This matches verified signatures by the artist but does not alone guarantee authentication, as some unsigned or unauthorized works exist.
  • Support: Appears to be on a hard canvas board panel, consistent with Coleman’s method for certain studio works in the 1980s–90s.
  • Frame: Period-appropriate gold and teal painted wood frame, likely original to the piece, and adds decorative value.

Authentication Notes:

There are several factors suggesting this is a genuine James D. Coleman original:

  • Style, color palette, and subject matter are consistent with authenticated works.
  • Signature matches known authentic examples.
  • Physical inspection of paint texture and canvas support aligns with original works (not a mass-produced giclĂ©e).

However, because of James Coleman’s fame and the volume of his licensed prints and studio reproductions, a professional authentication is strongly recommended if this is intended for sale at full market value.

Current Market Value Estimate:

Type

Estimated Value

Retail (gallery)

$1,200 – $2,500

Private party resale

$600 – $1,000

Auction (unauthenticated)

$300 – $700

Framing replacement value

~$150–$250

If verified as an original and marketed properly, it could command higher prices—especially given the Yosemite theme and larger size.

Recommendations:

  1. Authentication:
    • Contact Coleman Signature Art or a professional fine art appraiser specializing in 20th-century American landscape artists.
    • Provide high-resolution photos of the front, back, frame, and signature.
    • Inquire about certificates of authenticity (COA) or artist studio records.
  2. Sale Options:
    • If authenticated: Consider selling through an art gallery, online art platform (like Saatchi Art or Artfinder), or auction house.
    • If not authenticated: eBay, Etsy, or local fine art markets could still yield $300–$600 depending on condition and buyer interest.
  3. Insurance Value:
    • If verified as an original, insure it for $2,000–$2,500.

Conclusion:

You likely own an original landscape painting by James D. Coleman—an acclaimed Disney background artist turned fine art painter. The Yosemite setting, soft lighting, and detailed composition all reflect Coleman’s known style. With proper authentication, this work could fetch over $1,000 on the open market, and its artistic value makes it a striking and meaningful piece regardless of sale intent.
