Authentication and Description

This whimsical figural pear paperweight is a known novelty piece produced in Japan during the post-WWII export boom of the mid-to-late 20th century. The stamped slogan "WHAT A PEAR" is a humorous play on words, common in midcentury giftware. The sticker label and finish are consistent with KI (or K.I.)—a lesser-known Japanese importer/exporter of novelty brassware, often sold in department stores and gift shops in the U.S. during the 1960s–1980s.

The item is lacquer-coated, giving it a warm golden-brass tone while preventing tarnishing—although the current wear suggests it has aged naturally in some areas. The sculptural form is decorative and functional, likely marketed as a paperweight, conversation piece, or desk dĂ©cor.

Comparable Market Listings

  • Similar novelty figural fruit paperweights from Japan (1950s–1980s), including apples, pears, and pineapples, typically sell in the $18–$45 USD range.
  • KI-stamped versions, especially in good condition with original labels, command slightly more, generally $30–$60 USD in the current vintage collectible market.
  • Condition, originality of finish, and presence of label are key value factors.

Estimated Market Value

$30–$50 USD

This value assumes current online market trends for novelty midcentury Japanese figural brass paperweights, with intact original labeling. If the lacquer were fully intact or the item part of a matched set (e.g., with an apple), the value could reach higher toward $60.

Notes

  • Collectible Appeal: Appeals to collectors of midcentury Japanese export ware, novelty desk accessories, brass fruit, and wordplay-based items.
  • Professional Appraisal: Not required unless part of a larger collection for insurance or donation purposes. This is a moderately common collectible.
