Antique Black Lacquer Mother-of-Pearl 3-Tiered Cabinet

📌 Description:

This is a three-tiered antique Asian cabinet, elaborately decorated with black lacquer and extensive mother-of-pearl inlay work. Each panel depicts floral, avian, or figural scenes, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship.

The piece features:

  • Multiple hinged compartments and/or display tiers
  • Hand-cut and inlaid mother-of-pearl motifs, including birds, butterflies, peonies, and traditional Chinese figures
  • Likely made of elm or rosewood (typical for this style)
  • Hand-forged metal hardware and fittings
  • Traditional Asian mortise-and-tenon joinery

🌏 Origin & Era:

  • Most likely Chinese, with possible Korean influence
  • Estimated date: Late Qing Dynasty to early Republic period (c. 1890–1930)
  • Style and subject matter align with export-oriented furniture from southern China during this period

📏 Estimated Dimensions (visual estimate from photos – please confirm):

  • Height: Approx. 4 to 4.5 feet
  • Width: Approx. 2.5 feet
  • Depth: Approx. 12–16 inches

💎 Notable Features:

  • Full lacquer coating over wood with multi-panel inlay
  • Pearl inlay shimmer is still vibrant (a key condition factor)
  • Intricate landscape and figure scenes, which are not mass-produced
  • Brass/bronze latchwork and possible removable or foldable design

🧠 Value Drivers:

  • Mother-of-pearl artistry (labor-intensive and collectible)
  • Surviving lacquer finish in good condition
  • Rarity of multi-tiered display design with hinged elements
  • Intact hardware and craftsmanship (little to no warping)
  • Strong interest from collectors of Asian export furniture, especially in California, Vancouver, New York, and London

📋 Suggestions:

  • Avoid refinishing or polishing — this could reduce value
  • Maintain humidity stability to protect lacquer and pearl
  • If selling: Consider Asian antique dealers, online auction platforms (like LiveAuctioneers or EBTH), or high-end consignment galleries
  • If donating (e.g., for tax purposes): A formal IRS-compliant appraisal would be required
