African Folk/Tribal Painting (Signed “DEB”)

Description:
This is a mid-20th century African folk art painting, likely created in the 1950s–1960s, representing a stylized tribal or village scene. The painting features two figures with dynamic hair and baskets, engaged in rhythmic daily activities, with a tree or fountain structure at the center. It is rendered in gouache on a dark background, possibly black or navy paper or canvas. The colors are vibrant and the composition is symmetrical, with a clear folk or naive art aesthetic. The piece is framed (though the frame is loose) and signed "DEB" in the bottom right corner.

Medium:
Gouache on heavy paper or canvas, framed under glass

Style & Origin:

  • Folk Art / Tribal Art
  • Possibly Congolese, related to the Poto-Poto School of Painting (Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo)
  • Strong MCM (mid-century modern) decorative appeal

Signature:
Signed “DEB” with stylized script. The artist remains unidentified in major auction databases, but works signed "DEB" with similar motifs do occasionally appear in vintage folk art markets and online marketplaces.

Dimensions:

  • Framed: 13 x 10.75 x 0.6 inches
  • Unframed: 12 x 10.7 inches

Condition:

  • Artwork: Good — vivid colors and minimal wear
  • Frame: Fair — loose and aged, may need replacement for resale or preservation

Estimated Market Value:

  • Low-end: $40–$60 CAD (decorative/flea market or thrift resale)
  • Mid-range: $80–$120 CAD (mid-century art or folk art-focused shops)
  • High-end: $150–$200 CAD (specialty galleries or to collectors of mid-20th century African folk art)

Note:
While not attributed to a widely recognized artist, the stylistic charm, subject matter, and possible connection to the Poto-Poto School enhance its decorative and collectible value. Its mid-century origins and African folk appeal may increase desirability in retro and global folk art markets.

Recommendation:

If you’re planning to sell:

  • Consider a platform like Etsy, Chairish, or eBay with keywords: African Folk Art, Mid-Century, Poto-Poto School, DEB Artist, Tribal Painting.
  • Mention the vintage frame and offer the option to ship unframed to save on cost.

If you’re keeping:

  • Have the frame professionally tightened or replaced with a period-appropriate one to enhance presentation and preserve the piece.
