Help identifying and possibly appraising an old chair!!

By Antmel@12, 9 December, 2023
Description

Someone tossed this chair at the local dump, and I was able to rescue it. I have searched and searched online for it with no luck. I don't know how old it is or where it was made. There are no markings underneath it. I have done very little as far as cleaning it goes (I just went over it with the shop vac one time). Some of the detail on the legs is peeling off; I don't know if it belongs in the dump or not (either way, I like the way it looks, so I am happy I rescued it!!). It may not even be that old!! I really am at a loss on this one and would appreciate any help I could get!!

Your piece is Victorian and…

Your piece is Victorian and in the Renaissance Revival style which was popular 1850-1880. Furniture in this style ranged from works made in shops employing skilled craftsmen to the products of large Midwestern factories. The New York shops, in particular, produced work with elegant detail and elaborate inlays, while the factories, centered primarily in Grand Rapids, manufactured pieces with turned and cut elements.

This one looks to be one by one of the big name makers like Herter Brothers and need a physical appraisal.
