Herbert Hall, M.D. established a pottery program as an element in therapy for women with nervous disorders in Marblehead, Massachusetts in 1904. The pottery program became professionalized after the hiring of Arthur Baggs in 1905. This led to the establishment of a separate for profit enterprise named Marblehead Pottery in 1908. The Marblehead Pottery business was sold to Arthur E. Baggs in 1915. The pottery closed in 1936.
Most wall pockets, frogs, tiles and hanging pieces are unsigned. Some candlestick holders are unmarked. An oval Marblehead Pottery paper label was applied in addition to the impressed mark beginning in 1915. A second oval label occasionally listed the retail price. Currently most comparable tiles by Marblehead sell at auction in the $400.00- $600.00 range
