Shreve, Crump & Low was established in 1796 in a small shop across from Paul Revere's silversmith shop. After Boston's Great Fire of 1872, Shreve built a new store at 225 Washington Street. The design pioneered the use of plate glass and artificial lighting. The store's move in 1929 to its current location introduced art deco architecture to Boston. Visitors can still view the original silver gilt ceiling.
