2 DORIS GILBERT PAINTINGS

Profile picture for user tornado88
By tornado88, 27 June, 2015
Description

It is signed, “Doris Gilbert” near the lower right hand corner. I have found 2 auction records for Doris Gilbert on artprice.com. The paintings on Artprice are listed as acrylic and the paint is relatively thin, so I wonder if this painting might also be acrylic.I think that it is probably an oil. Other Doris Gilbert paintings that I have seen on Ebay are listed as oils. I do not know how to be sure one way or the other. It might be both. She was a native of La Jolla, California and that she was active mid 20th century. Painting was done in the 1960's.

The frame measures about 12 X 22 inches. The canvas exposed by the frame measures about 23 X 13 ½ inches.

Condition is in good condition. Frame and painting are as shown. These paintings are for sale. $500 each or 950 both.

Distinguishing marks
Stunning oil on canvas of crashing waves seascape painting by renowned Californian artist Doris Gilbert (active in the mid 20th century). The image is of breaking waves on the rocks of a beach as viewed through the cloud break, part of her portraits of the ocean series.

The painting is signed in the bottom right corner.

Doris Gilbert's style was more on the realist side with attention to ocean details and mood of the coast such as attention to fog or light reflection off the ocean waves.
