Vintage mahogany wood and leather Brandt smoking stand or plant stand or what is it

By ashevillekat, 27 September, 2009
Description

I purchased this item recently at an estate sale here in Asheville NC. No one has a sure idea of what it is meant to be used for. It has 3 Duncan Phyfe style legs and 2 8" round surfaces for a plant or humidor or plates. There is a gold ring attached to grab it and move it around. The metal Brandt Hagerstown Maryland label is at the bottom along with a stamp that reads "genuine mahogany". Could it be a smoking stand? I would not want to see plants on it as the gold leafed leather is nearly perfect. Whatsit?

I too would like to know what this piece actually is. Anybody?

I feel certain it is not a plant stand but am not sure what it would originally have been used for. Your best guess would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I just purchased this same thing for $5 and can not find anything about it online except for your post.  Someone guessed that it was a butler tray and someone else said plant stand.  I don't know what it is but I love it!  I really wish I knew more about it!

I still don't know what it's original intended use was. I can't really imagine that it was designed to be a plant holder because of the damage water could do to the leather surfaces. I like it a lot too. I'm leaning toward butler tray. Please let me know if you figure this mystery out.

That is exactly what I said! They wouldn't put leather on a plant stand. How long ago did you post this? And don't worry, I'm not giving up! Lol

Re: Vintage mahogany wood and leather Brandt smoking stand or...

I think that I first posted this last fall...maybe in September. I thought that I got a good deal when I bought this for $20 at an estate auction. You got a really, REALLY good deal. Shortly after I bought mine, I saw an old ad at

https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/tables/serving-tables/unusual-vintage…;

The seller sold the table as a "double wine stand." She told me she got about $100 for it. I don't think it's a wine stand because if you tried to lift it by it's handle with a wine bottle on it you'd likely have the bottle fall. I think it would hold something with a lower profile that you would want to be able to easily move from place to place...like a butler tray. I've seen many smoking stands and you COULD put a humidor on one table and an ashtray on the other...but you'd be better off with a traditional smoking stand that is essentially a box on legs with a round grooved area atop the box to keep an ashtray from sliding off. In think the raised rim of these tabletops kept something about the same size of the tabletop from sliding off. I'd love to know just what that something was.
