Original American Indian Photograph 1913 or 1916

Profile picture for user eveiburke
By eveiburke, 15 August, 2012
Description

I have an original photograph taken by Charles Carpenter between 1913 and 1916. Looks like it is on a reservation as the Chief is standing giving orders to his braves who are on horseback. The Chief's wife is sitting on the ground in front of the TeePee and there are also several dogs laying around. Looks like it was taken in Maybe Nevada or Colorado.

A little info about the photographer is also added and a picture of the photograph will be added to help in the appraisel.

Any help with an appraisal will be apperciated. Contact me on twitter. Or at private email.

Thanks for the help.

Darlene

History
Charles H. Carpenter was an American photographer.[1] He is notable for serving as the first photographer for the Field Museum, holding that position from 1899 to 1947. He took over 900 photos of the Hopi in 1900 as part of George A. Dorsey' s Stanley McCormick Hopi Expedition to Arizona and produced 2,000 negatives at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904.
Carpenter and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition
In 1904, the city of St. Louis was host to an exposition held to celebrate the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase. There were over forty-seven acres of exhibits of Philippine and Native American tribes including Pawnee, Pueblo, Pima, Pomo, Kwakiutl, Eskimo, Oglala and Rosebud Sioux who recreated ceremonies and lived in native habitats on the Fairgrounds. The Fair was Carpenter's last field assignment for the Museum, and he made over 3,000 negatives, including portraits of Geronimo and Pacific Northwest Coast Natives Americans Bob Harris and Charles Nowell. Prints from Charles Carpenter's series of Native American portraits taken at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition were requested by the Oglala Lakota College archives. Field Museum sent more than 100 photographs, but lacked detailed caption information for all but a few. In return, the College provided the Museum with the names and family histories of sixty of the photographs' subjects.
