Antique Framed Oil on Canvas portrait of a woman painting 1809

By amcconnell, 11 April, 2011
Description

I Purchased this and several other beautiful oil paintings at a government seized auction called The Rosemont Inn Mansion, Bed and Breakfast, Vevay, IN.  The Rosemont Inn is a beautifully restored 1881 brick mansion constructed with the finest examples

of Indiana native hardwood craftsmanship. It had many fine Art, Antiques, collectibles:  furnishings.  Various works of fine art including many original oil paintings, “Portrait Of A Woman“, “Atmospheric Beauty” by Jules Mersfeder, other

artists include P. Sanchez, Henry L. Richler, J. Mark, S. Suburger, and many others. The Inn houses a collection of 18th and 19th century museum quality artwork consisting of landscapes and early American portraits.

The frame size of  this painting is 30-1/4x34x4. The picture size itself is 24x28. There is a signature on the front top left corner but can't make out what it is, something like R or K .  then J or I and possibly something like Lang, RJ Lang, or KJ Lang, really not sure. The back reads Jane Gardner born August 28, 1809.

Re: Antique Framed Oil on Canvas portrait of a woman ...

You've definitely got a nice piece there, but it's hard to tell from the info provided what it would be worth, (some close up pics of the signature would help) and it would have to be evaulated by an expert to determine the value.

You might try Heritage Auctions (HA.com) they are a high end auction house, and they do online appraisals of art for free.

To get the best, most accurate appraisal I strongly recommend using the best quality camera you can get your hands on and taking pictures in both daylight and in low light, then pick out the best, clearest pictures of each pertinent area, and make sure to include one of the front, one of the back of the piece, a close up of both the signature and the writing on the back, and close ups of any damages.

Looks like a series I own.  The monogram is a K overlaid with a J or I

Re: Antique Framed Oil on Canvas portrait of a woman ...

Some early portraits of this type can be quite valuable. Oil paintings really require the services of a Specialist appraiser to determine what you have and make recommendations for it's value in the best market venue. Generally an auction market that specializes in this type of portrait is your best bet. Just out of curiosity have you tried reseaching the name written on the back?
