EGW&S 6/3 silver pitcher? With pictures.

By Chocolitaz, 19 March, 2009
Description

Untarnished, 8 slight dents. Handle is made of bamboo (we think).

Also have this piece. Dimensions are : 5 inches handle to bottom. 12 inches around its bulkiest point. They look similiar but this one is smaller and has different markings on the bottom. It reads "IS INTERNATIONAL SILVER CO. 6/2". It has one dent and looks shinier. We wonder if this is a newer piece. Can anyone give an estimate of time periods and value for both?

Re: EGW&S 6/3 silver pitcher? With pictures.

The good news is that you clearly have hall marks. These will tell you where and when it was made, by whom and maybe the silver content. That will help narrow things down greatly.

The bad news is, that the photos are too small and blurry for me to look them up for you. I can't see enough detail.

However, most large bookstores have a number of books on hallmarks in the antique section. Your library may have it too.

Particularly if you are interested in collecting silver, they are worth getting. The better ones explain how to look up the marks too. Look for something that covers a lot of different country hallmarks.

Be careful as forgeries do exist. I saw one of a perfectly good silver beer mug with authentic hall marks turned into a tea pot. It was very creative, but tea was unknown to that country at that time.

Finding the hallmark data will go a long way into answering your questions!

Thank you very much for your reply, and I'm sure it will prove helpful. I don't suppose you could recommend a book in particular?

I have the same pitcher. It is Elizur G. Webster and Sons, post 1928 when the company was sold to International Silver. Hope this helps.
