By americanbuildings, 28 October, 2008
Description

I was on Ebay looking at lamps and stumbled on this lamp.  When i saw the name Houdon, i looked up that name on Google and found out that this piece seems to be rare if this is really who made it.  So i hit the buy it now button and bought it.  I really hope this is a real Houdon piece.

Re: Houdan Cherub Lamp

Hi, I love the lamp. I have a bronze cherub lamp and it slightly resembles the facial features of your piece, and I paid 75.00 at an antique store. I got it on sale and that was back in 1999. I am going to post it on here too once I can get my camera to work. Mine doesn't have a Houdon signature though and can't seem to find a signature.

I found a website with a bronze cherub that is modeled after Houdon and sells for $1960.00

Check out this link:

look under info:

"Cupid with Bow"
after Houdon.

Re: Houdan Cherub Lamp

I found a website that is selling Houdon Cupid lamps. Look below to check out this link, this particular lamp sells for $1099.00

I think you got a good deal for your lamp whether it is an original Houdon or not.

Re: Houdan Cherub Lamp

The lamp pictured in the original post is a modern reproduction, and for a very good reason, Jean-Antoine Houdon never made any lamps ;~). He was one of the most celebrated portrait Sculptors
of his day, but he died about 60 years before electric lighting. Such lamps have been often sell for high prices when new, but have terrible resale values.

Re: Houdan Cherub Lamp

Hi,  Thank you for that information.  So as i understand, this is one of the lamps that would sell for high dollar if new, although it is a reproduction?  What would you think the value of this lamp is?  I paid $67.  So it is worth what i paid for it?

Thank you again,

Jackie
