William and Mary Cabinet or Chest

By deerskie, 10 June, 2009
Description

This is a chest-over-one-drawer on large ball feet. Two large doors with turned wooden knobs and one large drawer beneath with two brass pulls with backplate. One shelf within the main compartment. Doors and drawer have flat panels of figured or burled wood that resembles tiger maple (possibly laburnum?), surrounded by a border of very fine scroll carving. Sides, top, and feet appear to be walnut or mahogany. Wax finish on front; varnish on top sides and feet. Doors open all the way to lie flat against the sides, and the exposed inner door edges are finely carved, so the piece was probably meant to stand either closed or with doors open for display. Dovetail drawers. Ball feet attached to body by sliding onto wooden dowels. Solid wood. Original condition with original finish, feet, shelf, and hardware.

Very beautiful piece. Carving and construction are very fine.

Am curious whether this could possibly be a reproduction.

Will try to get a picture soon.
