Japanese Nagmochi Box

Profile picture for user theragrimes

Description

This was given to me. I was told that was  in Beverly Hils Home. The box is quite large. It is 4ft tall and 6ft wide. The inside was once lined but it seems the lining was removed and the wood is exposed. I researched as much as I could. The symbol on the front is from the Tokagowa Family crest (hollyhuck flower). Back in the days it was a wedding gift. The bride would put all her belongings inside and then two men would move it with sticks to her new house where it was used to put sheets and linen.

Not sure if this is a reproduction. Looked all over and enquired many places and have not found any place that reproduces these kinds of boxes.

If you know anything about this box please help! I would apperciate any assistance!

Thank you,

R.A.
