chinese? carved table

By b1982johnson, 14 August, 2012
Description

so my friend gave me this coffee table for helping her move. All I know about where it came from is that her mother moved here from hawaii and had it shipped here. It looks like chinese artwork but her mother is japanese so it could be japanese. She said it was really old but didnt give any other details. It has seen better days. there is a really thick finish of red on top of black. I cant tell if its laquer or resin but underneath the finish there is a really thin layer of a straw/hemp like mat material that is between the carved finish and the wood. I cant really tell what kind of wood it is but its definately solid hardwood. but not as heavy as oak. the floral patterns were releif handcarved into the surface then painted over. underside of the table is flat black. no stamps or identifiable markings. the hinges have no stamps or markings and appear to be made of stamped tin? thats just my best guess. anyways the table is beautiful so ancient artifact or cheap knockoff im thinking im probably going to hold onto it for awhile. I want to fix it up though and make it look nicer. So if its not valuable then ill just do the restoration myself however i figured if it is a valuable antique then i should probably pay a professional to do the restoration for me. anyways im looking for anyones best guess on where the table came from and when it was made and how much its worth. any info that would point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
