"Pride of the Sioux" Collector Plate by Paul Calle

Description:
This is a decorative limited-edition porcelain collector plate titled ā€œPride of the Siouxā€ by renowned Western and historical artist Paul Calle. It was produced by The Franklin Mint under the endorsement of the American Indian Heritage Foundation Museum. This plate features a detailed and respectful depiction of a Sioux elder in traditional regalia with a horse in the background. It is part of a numbered series and includes 24k gold trim.

  • Material: Fine porcelain
  • Diameter: Approximately 8 to 8.5 inches (standard collector plate size)
  • Edge: 24k gold rim
  • Markings: Fully marked on reverse with plate name, artist signature, edition number (B2908), and Franklin Mint production details
  • Condition: Excellent to mint, with original Styrofoam packaging (no COA present)

Artist Note:
Paul Calle (1928–2010) was a respected artist known for his work with NASA, the U.S. Postal Service, and historical subjects including Native American themes. Plates featuring his work tend to be more desirable among collectors of Americana and Native American-inspired art.

Current Market Value (2024–2025):

Values for these types of limited-edition collector plates vary based on condition, demand, and whether the original Certificate of Authenticity (COA) and box are included.

  • With COA & box (mint condition): $25–$45
  • Without COA but in mint condition (as yours is): $15–$30
  • As a full set (if matched with the other 2 plates by Gary Ampel): $45–$75 for the trio, depending on condition and presentation

Note: Values are for resale on platforms like eBay, Etsy, or collector groups. Insurance valuation may be slightly higher.

Other Considerations:

  • Display Only: As stated on the plate, these are not safe for food use and are strictly decorative.
  • Collector Interest: Interest in Franklin Mint plates has declined in recent years, but Native American-themed plates by known artists retain niche appeal.
  • For Sale?: If you ever decide to sell, it's ideal to photograph them well, note the plate number, and mention Paul Calle and Franklin Mint clearly in listings.
