ANTIQUE ICE SKATES WITH KEY UNION HARDWARE USA

By JDM72032, 16 July, 2009
Description

These fabulous ice skates date to an era when medalling in winter sports was an idea yet to dawn. Dating to the late 1800's, they beat the beginning of the Olympic Winter Games by more than a quarter of a century. That's not to say that these antique skates weren't worn for a speed skating contest or graceful figure eights, but they never ice danced, although they are handsome enough to have done so.
These great 19th Century skates are a clamp on style. Their iron body is impressed with the Union Hardware manufacturing logo. They are also marked with the model "No. 1824" and their size, "11-1/2", on each skate. The blade length is just over 12".

Very good looking with an ornametal club-shaped cutout, they are perfect for display. They are also in such excellent condition, without damage or rust, that you could also consider using them. Either way, you'd never find yourself on thin ice with this great pair of Victorian American skates.
