18th or Early 19th Century Footed Mahogany Jewelry Box? English? .. or 1920's?

By EricCarrion, 23 January, 2018
Description

I just found this jewelry box or casket in a listing on Craigs List for a very affordable price. It is advertised as being from the 1920's, but looks much older to me. I am not an expert, but I do buy and sell mostly 19th century small antiques to resell on Ebay and would like to know if I am correct, and if picking this up would be worth the $40 investment. It looks to me to be mahogany with brass decorative hardware. The hinges and internal hardware also look old, as do the imperfections of the wood and the style itself. If it is old, it's small size would indicate that it would be late 18th century or later. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Approximate date, type of wood and style attributes would be preferred (unless it is not a great piece, I will just move past it). Students loans have destroyed me, and a possible good investment would really help. It measures 4.5" inches height, 7 1/4" wide, and 4" deep. Thank you!

Re: 18th or Early 19th Century Footed Mahogany Jewelry Box?...

It's in the Empire Style, but the construction details make it look like like a early 20th Century Empire Revival style example. We'd retail one like this cleaned up a bit for about $150.00.
