A Tea Garden by William R. Bigg, RA and Engraving by George Moreland, RA

By Lynn Watters, 12 July, 2016
Description

1. Oil on Canvas - "A Tea Garden" by William Redmore Bigg, R.A. (1755-1828) 19" x 25" without frame2. Engraving - "A Tea Garden" by George Moreland, RA (1763-1804)  20.5" x 24.25" without frame Listed as an English genre artist by William Redmore Bigg, 1755-1828, this oil was painted circa 1790. During restoration and cleaning was found another portrait underneath this oil. Accompanying this oil is a print (circa 1790) of the same title by George Moreland (1763-1809). During this period, there was a controversy between the two artist concerning plagiarism.  In 2011 a high auction bid for a Bigg was $24,000.  There is an original oil on canvas by George Moreland, of "A Tea Garden", which is 1 of a pair of paintings by Moreland.  The other painting entitled "St. James Park" is of a similar genre showing a family outing in the park.  The Moreland oil "A Tea Garden" was bequeathed to the Tate Museum, but I'm not sure if "St. James Park" is at the Tate.  The confusion lies in the fact that I own an original oil on canvas of "A Tea Garden" by William Redmore Bigg, R.A. and an engraving of "A Tea Garden" by George Moreland, R.A.  If possible, I would appreciate any information you might provide and an estimate for both pieces. Below I've attached photoss of both the oil by Bigg, with signature, name plate and back and a photo of the engraving by Moreland, with signature.   Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Lynn J. Watters
