Taylor, Smith, and Taylor China Set

Overview

The china set is a 16-piece setting for 10, produced by Taylor, Smith & Taylor (TST), a well-known American pottery company founded in 1899 in Chester, West Virginia. TST was known for its elegant and durable dinnerware. The markings on the back of the pieces include the company name and a code, which is likely a date indicator or production batch number. Based on the "11 44" marking, it is possible this set was manufactured in November 1944 or 1940s-50s era depending on TST's coding system at the time.

Pattern Details

  • Design: Floral and vine border, central floral motif, and a gold band around the edges.
  • Condition: Listed as fair, which likely indicates visible wear such as fading, minor chips, or crazing in the glaze, which are common in vintage dinnerware sets used over time.

Current Market Value

  1. Factors Affecting Value:
    • Rarity: TST produced a wide variety of patterns, some more common than others. The value can increase if the pattern is sought after or part of a limited production run.
    • Condition: Since the set is in fair condition, it may appeal to collectors for decorative purposes or as a replacement set, rather than as pristine collector items.
    • Completeness: Having a complete 16-piece setting for 10 enhances its value, but any missing or heavily damaged pieces reduce overall worth.
  2. Estimated Value:
    • Individual Pieces: In fair condition, individual pieces (cups, plates, bowls) may sell for $3-$10 each depending on the pattern and buyer demand.
    • Complete Set: The 16-piece set for 10, if sold together, could be worth $150-$250. Prices may vary significantly depending on the market and location.

Recommendation

For a more precise valuation, consider consulting a professional appraiser who specializes in vintage and antique dinnerware. They can provide additional context on the pattern and current market trends. Online platforms like eBay or Replacements.com may also help determine the specific pattern name and pricing trends for similar items.

Lovely set, but 20th century…

Lovely set, but 20th century china is selling at a great discount at present, the last 10 sets of Taylor Smith services I've seen listed at auction failed to meet their minimums ( ($50-$150) and sales were passed.
