Reed Table

By 123moms, 10 January, 2008
Description

This is a round reed table with a lower shelf and four legs. The shelf is a mirror image of the top, except that the top measures 27 inches across and the shelf measures 21 inches. There is a 6 1/2 inch (diameter) round piece of wood on the top, and a 5 1/2 inch piece on the shelf. Both the top and the shelf are ringed by a braided piece of triple reeds painted in black. The rest of the piece is painted in a red buttermilk-type paint. The bottom of the legs are embellished with a twisted reed pattern from the floor to the shelf height. Underneath the top it says P P in white. I think it's chalk, but it could be a very faint white paint. My grandparents purchased this at auction in Pennsylvania in about 1950. It was appraised at $1700 in 1986. I remember the appraiser saying it was reed, not wicker, that it has the original paint,

and that it possibly was Appalachian. She also mentioned Kentucky, but I can't remember what she said about that.
