Ladies Spittoon porcelain marked Carlsbad Austria A.K.

By lisa1966, 22 May, 2015
Description

I'm trying to find out some information on my ladies porcelain spittoon. The top is white and goes to a light blue, it has a painted cherub in a cart the cherub is holding reins which are attached to 4 birds which appear to be pulling the cherub in the cart. The lip of the spittoon is ruffled white on the outside edged in gold and blue on the inside edge, wth 1 cherub laying on his side on flowers. The cherubs pictures are done in brown. The spittoon also has ridges, that appears as is the bowl was twisted. the underside is white and kind of looks like a flower because of the twisting. The mark on the bottom is a circle with the words Carlsbad Austria and another circle inside with the initials A.K. There is also a series of numbers 09-07-129. The only information I found on the back mark was that it is an importers mark. It is the mark for Alexander Klingenburg Importing. He operated his importing firm at 35 & 37 Park Place, New York City, from 1880 until 1894 at the time of his death. The mark was used until 1895 at which time Charles L. Dwenger purchased the importing company. The mark Dwenger used was similar but the middle of the circle says AK Co.  Klingenburg purchased quality white ware from European markets for decorating by studio painters and commercial dinnerware companies.
