Illustrated Current News, Inc issue June 7, 1940 No. 4801

By mamajudy, 20 August, 2009
Description

Can't tell exactly what this is. Appears to be a print of a sepia photo. At top left are the words in very small print "Entered as a second-class matter April 15, 1931 at the post office at New Haven, Connecticutt, under act of March 3, 1879. At center top and half moon encircled in bold print caps "ILLUSTRATED CURRENT NEWS". At top right are words again in very small print "Published Monday, Wednesday and Friday by Illustrated Current News, Inc., New Haven, Conn. Subscription Annually, $20.80 and to the furthest top right the date June 7, 1944 - No. 4801 The photo is of soldiers in the foreground, 8 of which have guns shouldered to fire over the entire cemetery in the background which is surrounded by foliage, trees and what may be an indecernible building/house and hills; 7 soldiers stand behind the volleying soldiers at attention. There are two soldiers standing (also in uniform) among the graves facing the volley and appear to have cameras and to be taking photgraphs of them and another one soldier behind the entire group at attention
also apeparing to be taking a photo of the proceedings. At the far right in the photo there are 6 soldiers holding various flags, including the American flag and others all in uniform viewing ceremony in far right foreground. At the bottom, under the photo (photo istself is captured within black lined border) are larger bold capitalized words (centered under photo) which read "HONOR AMERICAN DEAD AT ANZIO" Under that sentence in smaller type in apropriate upper and lower case is the following two sentences "Fring squad sends volley over graves of soldiers in American cemetery at Anzio, Italy, at a Memorial Day ceremony. Salute followed an address by Fifth Army Commander, Lt. Gen. Mark W. Clark." There is a soldier in front of the flags facing the standing perpendicular to the men with guns shouldered and those standing at attention who may be giving the command and who could possibly be the Lt. General; or he could be among those viewing the ceremony (whose backs are to us), if in photo at all. There is one last sentence at very bottom center in small but bold type which reads "News Note: Bombings Cut Heavily Into German Synthetic Oil Supplies."

This photo was found preserved in a large plastic covered frame. The actual print was once folded in half and then in half again. One fold is visible but the other barely. All printed matter is in a margin about 1" at the top and about 2" at bottom and 1" at sides. There is one small tear in the margin area on left side. I removed from the frame to check backside, no markings at all on back.

I do not know how to photo it to send, would have to ask son if need be.
