We also have an upright piano, while it takes an expert to tell the full value (is the sounding board cracked, for example) we found that, behind the panels were marks that gave a much clearer age to it. The piano tuners tended (at least in our area) to mark the date and name when they were last tuned. This inadvertantly gives a nice history of the piece too. The front and top of the unit should be easily (abet carefully!) removable to see if yours has any markings too.

Unfortunately the music pieces may or may not have any bearing. But older music scores also have value! Don't discard them before you check them out!
