C & M Hemstock chicken brick/crock/roaster not stamped "chicken"

By laurenfms, 13 February, 2021
Description

I'm looking for a date range for this Hemstock chicken brick. All of the others I've seen have the word "chicken" stamped on it but this one does not. It's got a lovely seasoning on it and it's in great shape. Any thoughts on value and age would be appreciated! I paid $10 USD for it at a rummage sale.

Re: C & M Hemstock chicken brick/crock/roaster not stamped ...

Here’s what I found, first this article https://www.independent.co.uk/property/interiors/secret-history-chicken…
Next one was sold on Etsy and it says it was made in the 1980’s https://www.etsy.com/listing/911026430/vintage-c-m-hemstock-terracotta-…
One on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Terracotta-Chicken-Brick-C-M-Hemstock-Stoke-On…
One on eBay that did not sell https://www.ebay.com/itm/C-amp-M-HEMSTOCK-Clay-Chicken-Roaster-MADE-IN-…
One being sold on eBay now https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-C-M-Hemstock-Terra-Cotta-Clay-CHICKEN-…
New ones, not the same as yours, being sold now https://www.wmpot.co.uk/chicken-bricks
From the first article it looks like these were first introduced to Britain in 1964 by Sir Terence Conran.
Maybe watch the one that’s being sold now and see if it sales. I doubt it will get that high price. I’m not an expert, just doing google research but I’m thinking most people who’d want one would want it for it’s function, to use it rather than it’s vintage appeal and so would be valued more as cookware than collectible. I’d just be guessing a value so hopefully @lovejoy shows up this weekend and gives a better appraisal. I do think you got a good deal and you should use it.
