Antique ornate clock

By bdaun1, 13 February, 2021
Description

My great aunts were big collectors. Especially German, French, and Italian items. We always called this the "Ugly Clock". But now, I'm wondering it it is Jacob Petit? I assume there is supposed to be a back plate covering the bell? I don't know if it is supposed to have a glass cover over the clock but there is nothing there now. There appears to be cracks around the winding areas of the clock face. No other visible chips or cracks. I haven't tried to wind it. It is approximately 12 3/4" tall, 8 1/4" at base, and about 4 1/4" deep at the base.

My great aunts were collectors in Northern Wisconsin. They collected primarily items from Europe and many of the things I have from them are from 1940-1970. But, this may have come with my great grandmother (from Germany).

Re: Antique ornate clock

This is an example of "Paris Porcelain" made during the second quarter of the 19th Century, pieces like this were seldom marked. They were made by smaller studios centered around Paris, in some cases using undecorated blanks from larger porcelain works and decorating them in the styles of the famous Sevres Porcelain Works.

Re: Antique ornate clock

Super appreciative of your comments! Thank you. As I said earlier, I don't see any markings on the porcelain. I looked closer at the clockworks today looking for name but only came up with this number (so far)- 20704 stamped into the clockworks plate. The "2" is slightly off center with the other numbers. Does that mean anything or help in anyway of identifying or dating the clock?
