Antique Map

By rms, 18 May, 2009
Description

From what I can tell this is #75 of however many re-prints were done of this map. I've heard that California being depicted as an island makes this map unique. Thank you in advance for any knowledge that you contribute.

Re: Antique Map

You really have to get items like this physically examined, there is no way to tell from an image that a map is the real McCoy.
That being said, based on what I can see this looks like a repro.

Re: Antique Map

Thank you for the advice; I agree with you that a physical examination is best. I understand that it's not the original ;) and based upon the bottom-right corner I'm assuming it's a #75 repro. I've heard that it's still quite valuable as the repro's were also done some time back, and the little I've heard is that there aren't many still around (but that's still just talk). Thanks again!

Cheers,
RMS.

Re: Antique Map

It's a nice looking map, make sure it's framed with acid free backing and kept out of direct sunlight if you wish to maintain it.

You appear to have a reproduction piece, and will possibly be able to find printer's information in the details. It looks to me like a page from a large atlas that were somewhat popular back in the early 1900's, so the printer info may or may not be present. Look for signs of binding. The map plates normally did not have anything on the backs during this time.

Most of his maps were black and white and only contained the center bordered piece of your map. Other information on the sides were added by publishers most typically.

Colored pieces of his were mostly fully colored, not just outlined, but he did a few apparently in this style.

In reproductions:
Black and white pieces appear to be selling for about $95
Outlined Colored for about $110
and fully colored are going for about $120.

Without further information and detailed images, this is about as far as I can take it.
