Antique German Framed Wax Carving

Profile picture for user MysteryCaller
By MysteryCaller, 19 December, 2015
Description

This intriguing wax portrait is apparently from the Schwabenland region in the southwest of Germany. The inscription from the bottom translates to "I am a fine musician and I come from Schwabenland". I have read that hand-crafted Schwabian wax sculptures and portraits were produced from the late 18th Century to the mid 19th Century. The gilded wooden frame and cardboard backing are joined by staples; and there is an inscription penciled upside-down on the backing referencing a "Frau Jennigs", and what appears to read "1918, 50". The frame and the wax work appear to be a mismatch, however, as the musicians at each end of the troupe are crowded into the frame. Exterior dimensions are 32 cm (h) and 33 cm (w). I will respectfully appreciate any expert information.

Re: Antique German Framed Wax Carving

Please excuse the cropped photo of the item. I repeatedly got an error message that my photo of the entire wax carving was too large a file as it was over 2 megabytes. I will continue to attenpt to post a photo of the framed carving in its entirety.
