Chinese Cloisonné Box

Decoration: Floral and foliate design on a bright turquoise background
Interior: Solid enamel-lined in turquoise
Feet: Four brass dome feet
Size: 5 7/8" long x 3 3/8" wide x 2 5/8" high
Markings: Unmarked
Condition: Excellent (minimal wear, no visible enamel loss or dents)

Historical Background

This item is a vintage to antique Chinese cloisonné box, likely dating from the late Republic period (1920s–40s) to mid-20th century, possibly up through the 1960s or early 1970s. The style and coloring—particularly the rich turquoise background and floral motifs—are consistent with export cloisonné ware popular in the Western market during this time.

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects. Wire compartments (cloisons) are filled with vitreous enamel and fired. The finished surface is polished, giving a rich, glossy appearance. Chinese cloisonné became especially popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties and continued into the 20th century for both domestic and export markets.

Market and Value Analysis

Comparable footed cloisonné boxes of similar size, age, and condition typically sell in the following ranges:

Market

Estimated Value (USD)

Private Collector Sale

$75–$125

Online Auction (eBay/Etsy)

$50–$90

Retail/Antique Store

$100–$175

Factors affecting value:

  • Condition: Yours appears excellent, which supports the upper end of the value range.
  • Unmarked: Lack of a maker’s mark reduces premium collector interest but is not unusual for export cloisonnĂ©.
  • Design & Craftsmanship: The vibrant color, high-quality floral design, and footed base enhance collectibility.

Recommendations

  • For Insurance: You may want to insure the piece for $125–$150, depending on its replacement value at a retail level.
  • For Sale: If selling online, a listing price of $85–$95 with best-offer enabled is reasonable.
  • For Authentication or Certification: If you believe it may be older (e.g., late Qing), a professional appraisal would help validate that claim and potentially raise its value.
