Adams Scrimshaw Mermaid on mammoth or whale ivory

By odditopia, 9 September, 2012
Description

I have a 6 1/2' tall 3" diameter scrimshaw by artist David Adams. It is signed Adams '95 and depicts a mermaid sitting on a rock on one side and mermaid and dolphin on the other. I have done the "pin test" on it and have determined it is not a plastic reproduction. I am unsure if it is fossilized mammoth or whale ivory.  It does not have a base. There are no chips or cracks and is in excellent overall condition. I would love to learn the approximate value of the piece. The seller had very little information and internet searches have convinced me that we got quite a deal.
