3 Tiered Korean Black Lacquered-Mother of Pearl Inlay Chest

By spinelli, 8 August, 2008
Description

This three tiered chest can come apart into three separate chests. Stacked on top of each other, it forms one large armoire.

The entire piece is painted in black shiny lacquer and the faces of each chest is inlayed with mother of pearl detail designs of flowers, birds, various animals etc. Each chest has two doors that open towards you with sliding doors within. Each chest is unique. The top chest is crowned with moulding. The middle chest has four uniform drawers. The lower chest has simple legs.

Although the piece looks heavy, each chest is incredibly light (may be made of traditional palownia wood that Korean furniture is historically made of.

The chest looks almost exactly like the one in the attached picture--with the exception of differences in age and mother of pearl design subjects (i.e. frog instead of a bird)

Re: 3 Tiered Korean Black Lacquered-Mother of Pearl Inlay Chest

I am interested in this item as well.  Have you received an appraisal on this item?  I have one just like it as well as the matching armoire that stands about 8 feet tall by 9 feet wide with all of the inlay as well and I was curious as to its value.

Re: 3 Tiered Korean Black Lacquered-Mother of Pearl Inlay Chest

I also have at item almost identical to the one in the picture from the 60-70's that we brought over from Korea in the early 70's.  I definitely want to see my item as its too large for my bedroom.  How much was your piece valued at?

I am also interested to know if you received an appraisal on this. I have 6 of the separate pieces that I would like to sell but I have no idea what they are worth. Your description fits what I have.

Re: 3 Tiered Korean Black Lacquered-Mother of Pearl Inlay Chest

Here’s one that sold for $375 at auction with an estimate of $500 - $1000 https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/70920623_korean-asian-mop-black-la…
They were asking $525 for this one https://www.chairish.com/product/2923683/vintage-1950s-korean-three-pie…
Info on the art form https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Najeonchilgi
More info on the art form https://www.moonbeartravel.com/korea-mother-of-pearl/
I have no idea if these prices reflect the value of your item but maybe this info is a place to start.
