This desk/secretary was obtained by my grandparents in the early 1960's. My grandfather was an attorney and he purchased this desk from a client of his who lived in France for a time and brought it back to the US with her. My grandmother kept a magazine featuring the desk on which President James Monroe penned the Monroe Doctrine, and it is seemingly identical to that. Since that was written in 1823 I am guessing that this is a Louis XVI piece. The main compartment is stuck and can only be opened a few inches so that is why there are no pics of the inside. However, this is a recent development. It was restored once sometime in the 60's but we are unsure what was done.
This is the original marriage license of my grandmother and grandfather from my mother's side. Their names were Florence Kennedy and Martin Moore. It is from Floyd County Indiana dated December 13, 1909. Witnesses were my great grandmother and grandfather James and Milliam Kennedy. For being being almost 100 years old it is in pretty good condition.
My Grandmother was born in 1912 in this country. Her Mother was born in 1886 in Germany, and her Great Aunt was born around 1860.
These baskets/carts were used in Germany, but I cannot find much history on them in this country.
So sometime between 1886 and 1912 (I think it was before 1900), my ancestors came to this country from Germany. I have other things that 'came over on the boat' with my ancestors...linens, flower bulbs, etc...so I feel this was probably something that came with them too.
I'm coming up completely empty handed on this. Would appreciate any contribution.
I have a dinner set with bowl and 3 vege side plates condiment set and servers...I am desperately trying to find out the name of the pattern on these items..have looked in Royal Winton books and even contacted them in England and they could not help me at all...
