Accurate Description of Item
One Early 20th Century Louis XV Style Bedroom Suite
Appraiser Remarks
A flowing abstraction of unbroken curves is the guiding principle of the Louis XV furniture style; the legs are curved, the back is curved and the seat is curved. It abhorred straight lines. In typical Louis XV furniture everything is curved, often with inset painted panels and doors. The Louis XV style is sometimes referred to as the Rococo Style. It is derived from two French words meaning rock and shell. The rock and shell were the two popular motifs for decoration of this period.
The style has been revived several times since its inception during the mid 1700's, notably during the late 19th Century and again in the 1920's when sets like this were made. Most painted suites like this were imported and sold through high end furniture stores in New York.
